Enigmatic Passion

RESENTED BY MAROONDAH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique symphony portrays the full range of human emotions from hope through happiness to despair. Written just before he died, the true meaning of this most dramatic of symphonies remains an enigma. Popular young cellist Charlotte Miles returns to perform Elgar’s poignant cello concerto, written shortly before the death of his beloved wife Alice and his last major work. The concert opens with the dramatic overture to Verdi’s early opera Nabucco.

Conductor : Willem van der Vis
Verdi Overture Nabucco
Elgar Cello Concerto in E min Op. 85
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 in B min Op. 74 Pathetique
Soloist: Charlotte Miles, Cello

A Cosmopolitan Journey

PRESENTED BY MAROONDAH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Join us for an eclectic program featuring composers from Russia, Germany, France and Austria. Our tribute to Beethoven continues with a performance by Julliard graduate Elyane Laussade of his third piano concerto, alternately brooding and exciting. Coppelia is Leo Dellibes’ best-loved ballet about a doll that comes to life and this suite features the best known music from the ballet. Evocative pictures of Russia from Mussorgsky and Borodin, and a stirring Viennese march by Strauss complete the concert.

Conductor : Willem van der Vis

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C min Op. 37
Borodin In the Steppes of Central Asia
Delibes Coppelia Suite No. 1

A Pastoral Afternoon

PRESENTED BY MAROONDAH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Beethoven’s famous depiction of the countryside in his Pastoral symphony concludes our tribute to his 250th birthday year. The pastoral theme continues with Mendelssohn’s famous nocturne from his incidental music to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Italian composer Antonio Salieri was a teacher of many famous composers including Beethoven and Mozart and came to fame in Peter Schaffer’s play and film Amadeus. Although mainly a composer of opera, he also wrote this attractive concerto for flute and oboe, performed by Lauren Gorman and Brienne Gawler.

Conductor : Willem van der Vis
Salieri Concerto for Flute and Oboe in C
Mendelssohn Nocturne from A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Beethoven Symphony No. 6 in F Op. 68 Pastoral
Soloists: Lauren Gorman, Flute & Brienne Gawler, Oboe
